“The Healing Power of Words: The Therapeutic Properties of Sharing Narratives”

On Veterans Day, a panel of veterans, academics, and writers, will discuss the power of storytelling and writing to heal after war. Col. Charles Hoge, SLC ’80, nationally-known expert on PTSD, author of Once a Warrior, will discuss his work helping veterans recover from PTSD and traumatic brain injury. Ryan Weemer, US Marine and Iraq war veteran will discuss the non-profit organization he created, the War Writers Campaign, a publishing company dedicated to publishing the works of veteran writers. Lulie Haddad, the founder of EveryVoice Productions and an award-winning documentary producer/director/writer, will share her work with the Writers Guild of America East’s Helen Deutsch Writing Workshops, a series of workshops dedicated to help veterans and caregivers of permanently wounded veterans, explore storytelling in all its forms. Adam Brown, SLC faculty, will discuss research from psychology and neuroscience on the importance of storytelling after traumatic events. SLC senior, Chris Hoffman, will moderate the panel.
