“The Decisive Moment Revisited” – A Virtual Photography Exhibit by The Ground Glass
“The Decisive Moment Revisited”
Ground Glass “Revisited Series” – 2nd Edition
A Virtual Photography Exhibit
The Ground Glass, a Westchester-based association of fine art photographers, will be hosting “The Decisive Moment Revisited,” a virtual photography exhibit inspired by the works of famous photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson.
“Revisited” is a theme concept challenging members of The Ground Glass to create new work inspired by famous photographers. Last year The Ground Glass presented the exhibit, “Pepper No. 30 Revisited,” in which members created interpretational work inspired by Edward Weston’s iconic Pepper #30 image. The first annual “Revisited” exhibit was held at the Friends Gallery of The North Castle Public Library. This year, members accepted a similar challenge to present and exhibit their work inspired by Cartier-Bresson. The exhibit was again scheduled at the Friends Gallery. However, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the exhibit will be virtual.
More often than not, great photographs are found at the intersection where preparation meets chance. A photographic equation, that when practiced with diligence and craftsmanship, is often referred to as “the decisive moment,” a term often attributed to French street photographer and Magnum Photo co-founder, Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004).
While it is true that much of his artistic vision and genius hinges on such an approach, it was not Cartier Bresson who actually coined the phrase. Its first use comes from another Frenchman, the 17th century Cardinal de Retz, who said, “There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment, and the masterpiece of good ruling is to know and seize this moment”. The term “decisive moment” was later adopted as the title of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s seminal photography book.
The concept, as it applies to the photographic process, is best summed up in Cartier-Bresson’s own words: “Photography is not like painting. There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative. Oops! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever.”
