Description

Harrison Council for the Arts presents a virtual art exhibit by Dorothy Cancellieri at the Harrison Public Library for the months of September and October.  This virtual exhibit consists of paintings of figures, animals, and landscapes. Also included are masks made out of clay and plaster (https://www.harrisonpl.org/art).
Dorothy Cancellieri’s paintings are full of emotions expressed through a palette of rich, vibrant colors; with figures and animals as her favorite subjects, Imagination plays a key role in each of her works.
Ms. Cancellieri was brought up in the Bronx and lived in Manhattan but has resided in Yonkers for the past 30 years. Art was always a favorite subject for her, beginning in elementary school and continuing through high school. She comes from a creative family. Her dad liked to draw, and was employed as a jeweler for Harry Winston.  Her mother’s palette was her home.  It had to look just so.  One of her brothers, Michael Cancellieri, is an artist, worked in advertising and does woodworking.  Her brother, Ron Cancellieri, does window treatments and interior decorating.
In 1980 Ms. Cancellieri started taking art classes at the New School in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.  While there she took a class with Professor Donald Stacy called “Painting and Drawing from the Imagination.” After the first class she was hooked, and continued to paint and draw at his loft, Stacy Studios in Union Square, for the next 32 years!
Ms. Cancellieri has taught art and yoga enrichment programs in elementary schools throughout Westchester County. She has been a member of the Mamaroneck Artist’s Guild from 1998 and her works have been shown in numerous exhibits throughout the area including the College of New Rochelle and the Blue Door Gallery, to name a few.  She now shares a studio at ArtsWestchester in White Plains.
In her words:  I adore color!  I love figures, animals, environments and landscapes.  The vividness of the canvases help to convey the story, meaning and emotions in my paintings.  My imagination is expressed through a kaleidoscope of color in my artwork. The use of vibrant paints has always enriched me, and left me with a feeling of peace and happiness.
