Teatro Nuovo: Medea in Corinto
Teatro Nuovo presents a semi-staged performance of Giovanni Simone Mayr’s Medea in Corinto. Mayr, a master awaiting rediscovery, was the teacher and lifelong friend of Donizetti and the most important link between Mozart and Rossini. The opera originally starred Rossini’s future wife, Isabella Colbran, and then became a favorite role of Giuditta Pasta, the first Norma and Anna Bolena, who kept the opera in repertory up to about 1840.
This event is part of Teatro Nuovo’s “The Dawn of Romantic Opera” Bel Canto Festival at Purchase College. This exciting new ensemble will present 19th-century opera with period instruments, in a unique style of semi-staging that brings each opera to full dramatic life in concert format.
