Taconic Opera Presents a Timeless Classic: Faust by Charles Gounod

Taconic Opera_FaustTaconic Opera is excited to announce that it will open its 19th season with one of the most performed operas of all times, Charles Gounod’s Faust.  Based on a piece of literature that has been studied for close to two centuries, Johann von Goëthe’s Faust, this opera tell the universally-recognizable tale of the good man who sells his soul to the devil for a few moments of earthly pleasure.  Taconic Opera will present a fully-staged version it in its original French, with professional soloists and orchestra, and with supertitles above the stage to enhance audience appreciation of this masterwork.

Gounod was man of great spiritual depth who preferred religious themes for his compositions. He was intrigued by man’s fight between good and evil (God vs. the devil), and was drawn to the tale of Faust for his inspiration to write an opera on that subject.  The music fully captures those heavenly and hellish moments as they unfold in the telling of the story. In addition to the opera Faust, Gounod’s other most popular works include the wonderful St. Cecilia’s Mass which is performed by choruses worldwide, and his Ave Maria (based on a work by Bach) which is universally recognized and has become a standard part of Christian religious ceremonies all over the world
