Sumi Ink Workshop

Instructor: Ryoko Endo

Japanese sumi ink painting is one of the foundations of East Asian art. This technique relies on subtle, controlled brushwork using special black ink to achieve a delicate balance between inked areas and white background. In this workshop, students will learn how to produce complex imagery with just a few careful brushstrokes, and to write their name in Japanese kanji script, a major part of the Japanese writing system. All registered participants will be provided with the necessary art supplies to create and take home their own paintings.

About Ryoko Endo:

Artist/instructor Ryoko Endo was born in Japan and studied graphic design and typography at Musashino Art University in Tokyo. After working in the Japanese food and publication industries for over 20 years, she moved to New York City in 1994. From 2004-2007, Ms. Endo studied Japanese calligraphy with Masako Inkyo and Shingai Tanaka; and took painting classes at the Arts Student League with artist/instructor Kikuo Saito who inspired her to create abstract paintings. Her work has been shown in galleries and competitions nationwide.
