Sufi Shrines in Uyghur China: A Conversation with Photographer and Video Artist Lisa Ross

New York based artist Lisa Ross has spent ten years capturing sacred landscapes in and around northwestern China’s Taklamakan Desert, often in the company of a Uyghur folklorist and an historian of Central Asia. In a talk to be held October 7 at 5:30 in the Sarah Lawrence College Heimbold Visual Arts Center she will present a short video and photographs of the shrines she visited over a decade in the Xinjiang region and discuss her work with members of the Sarah Lawrence College faculty. Ross’s photographic pilgrimage to these sites has been shown in several exhibitions.
