Steve Kroon
Steve Kroon has been a professional musician for more than 35 years. Born in Harlem and raised in Queens, he was influenced by the many great Jazz and R&B artists living right in the neighborhood. At home he often listened to his father’s records including Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez and Machito. When he would visit his friends, he would listen to all the great Jazz artists. Right in the neighborhood were Lester Young, Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, Count Basie and many more. Also a great influence on Steve was the great producer Henry Glover, who lived right on his corner. With all that diversity and style, his musical appreciation began in those early years. At that early stage he progressed to playing percussion. He and his brother Bobby would practice along with the recordings of these great artists, and Steve progressed to studying with various music teachers. Great influences on Steve were conga lessons with the great Tommy Lopez, Sr. and percussionist Dom Um Romao.
Steve began working with notables such as Luther Van Dross from 1981 to 2001, appearing on seven platinum albums and fifteen world tours, which included two live video performances. He also played on an array of television shows including The Tonight Show, David Letterman, Jay Leno, as well as the Grammy Awards. He performed with Ron Carter from 1987 to 2004, including extensive tours of the US, Japan and Brazil, as well as the well-known NYC Jazz scene including the Village Vanguard, Iridium, and the Blue Note chain from the US to Japan. He has also recorded with much of the ‘Who’s Who’ in the recording business such as Ron Carter, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, and Diana Krall, just to name a few.
In the past five years Steve Kroon has been working on his solo career, including four CDs.
