Steve Kroon Latin Jazz Sextet Concert


Steve Kroon has been a professional musician for the last 50 years. He was born in Harlem, and raised in Queens at a time when there were many great Jazz and R&B artists all around. His earliest exposure was to the music of Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez and Machito. But he was also exposed to many great jazz artists who lived right in the neighborhood , including Lester Young, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Count Basie and many more. His earliest teachers included Tommy Lopez, Sr. for conga lessons, and the great percussionist Dom Um Romao.

Steve worked with Luther Vandross from 1981 to 2001, appearing on seven platinum albums, fifteen world tours, which include two live video performances and an array of television shows from the Tonight Show to David Letterman, Jay Leno, as well as the Grammy’s. He also performed with Ron Carter from 1987 to 2004, including extensive tours of the U.S., Japan and Brazil, as well as the well-known NY Jazz scene.

Some of the places he has performed include the Village Vanguard, Iridium, and the Blue Note chain from the U.S. to Japan. He has recorded with much of the ‘Who’s Who’ in the recording business, names such as Ron Carter, Roberta Flack, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall, Stanley Turrentine, Bette Midler, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, just to name a few. He made the Downbeat Critics Poll Rising Star for 2016 and 2017.

Most recently Steve Kroon has released six CDs as a leader: In My Path; Señor Kroon; El Mas Alla (Beyond) ,Without A Doubt, On The One, and In Your Dreams.

PJS Jazz Society presents the best in jazz every Second Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, September through April. Most concerts start with a Young Musicians opening set from 5:15-6:00 pm, followed by two Headliner sets from 6:30-9:00 pm. Concerts are held in a cabaret setting. Additional parking available at the Holmes School (next to the First Presbyterian Church on Columbus Avenue).
