Special Event | Mural Unveiling | Artist Jacqueline Rivera

Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc.  welcomes the public to attend the unveiling of a new mural by local artist Jacqueline Rivera in their administrative offices in downtown Yonkers.

RSVP requested to: sandrag@wdom.org

Jacqueline is a Guatemalan-American artist, born in the South Bronx who has lived in Yonkers most of her life. She was diagnosed at an early school age as having a learning disability. She went on to say “Yes I have this but anyone can grow from this”. She did grow, albeit challenging, she went on to graduate from Gorton Yonkers High School in 2001 and later obtained a Visual Arts Degree from Westchester Community College in 2015. While attending school she was provided support services from Westchester Disabled On the Move Inc. to assist her when needed. She says “WDOM did a lot for me by providing guidance to stay focused and finish school all while coming out of my artist shell.” Jackie designed two tee shirts for WDOMI’s school transition programs. Although Jackie started with cartooning and graffiti art, she realized while attending college she had a passion for illustration design.  Some of her work can be seen at Community School 211 in the Bronx, an illustration for a poetry book cover published by Westchester Community College in 2013 called INK, a solo showcased art show for WCC Latin History Month. She is working on her 2nd year long collaboration joining other artists as part of “Arc of Moral Universe” notebook. Her art is influenced by growing up in the South Bronx and admiring the street graffiti and Latin art. Through her art she is educating the public about the Mayan Guatemalan Heritage. Her evolving art has become a fusion of her early work of graffiti street art and Mayan influences. She expresses herself and shares her experiences through art, telling a story for those who wish to hear. What’s the story behind WDOM’s Mural? She says “I wanted to promote something happy, something that brings smiles and light to a persons face.” Jacqueline’s artist influences range from Gilbert Cantu, Frida Kahlo, Kaws and Tony Peralta.
