Simile Craft Class with Rachel Hadas (in-person at HVWC)

Saturday, December 3, 2022
12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

From Homer to A.E. Stallings, similes play a vital role in making poetry precise, memorable, and vivid. Sometimes, though similes are as much about unlikeness as likeness – as a Homeric scholar has observed, similes can go off the rails.  Let’s dip into a few examples of this familiar but underrated poetic tool and see what we find.

This is a one-day Master Class taught in-person and capped at 10 students. Masks are suggested but nor required, nor is proof of vaccination status.

Please make sure to read our course policies page regarding workshop conduct and logistics before registering for any class at HVWC.

Rachel Hadas is the author of many books of poetry, essays, and translations; her two most recent books, PIECE BY PIECE (selected prose) and LOVE AND DREAD (poems), were both published in the summer of 2021. The recipient of many awards, she is Board of Governors professor of English at Rutgers-Newark, where she has taught for many years.
