Rock and A Soft Place Studio presents “Intimacy Of Sculpture” at Live 4 Art in Pawling, NY. “The Intimacy Of Sculpture” showcases three sculptors who work in different mediums and are stylistically as different as the materials they work. The thread that links all their works is the grace and flow of three dimensional shape.
Two of the sculptors hail from the Hudson Valley, Bob Madden, stone sculptor and Karen Madden metal artist. The third is internationally known wire mesh artist Bonnie Shanas from Cherry Hill, NJ.
Bob Madden is a stone artist using traditional tools of hammer and chisel in a reductive manner to take a stone and remove from it all that doesn’t correspond to his final vision. Bob transforms a cold inanimate material into an engaging shape and form imbued with the ability to stir emotions, and pose pointed philosophical questions.
Karen Madden’s sculptural medium is metal. She works the metal into graceful shapes and delicate curves. Inspiration for her works comes from the drive to manipulate the metal into forms that ultimately reflect an abstract idea that presents itself in the twists and turns of the metal.
Bonnie Shanas is a wire mesh artist who is in intrigued with the study of the human form. Inspired by dance, movement and the simplicity of unspoken gestures. To view her dancer is to become absorbed into the movement they suggest. Through reformation and manipulation of the underlying material, Bonnie coerces, compels, and convinces, the wire mesh to take on soft alluring imagery of human beings captured in the process of movement, or frozen for a moment in time.
