Serdar Arat: Works on Paper

This group of works on paper employ acrylic wash which allows the water to carry and settle pigments freely, creating the sense that the image, like a thought or a memory, is either forming or dissolving as we are looking at it. They also employ collage, which is wonderfully liberating, offers freedom from the predictable conventions and techniques of art making, and helps achieve sudden and unexpected results, thus keeping the creative process fresh. The imagery is often natural settings that are framed and otherwise affected by abstract geometries. A “contemporary romanticism”, aware of our mental landscapes as well as those of the natural environment, may be an accurate shorthand to describe the underlying sensibility.
