Screening, Talk to Her (2002)
A travel writer’s burgeoning relationship with a famed female matador is violently interrupted when she falls into a coma after a bullring tragedy, and while waiting at her hospital bedside, he meets a male nurse keeping a similar vigil over a comatose ballet dancer. Only Almodóvar could come up with such a deliciously ridiculous premise for a film, and only Almodóvar could make it into a melodrama of unusual emotional power. “The most mature work this director has ever brought to the screen… [has] the freakish, elegant calm of early Tennessee Williams.”
—The New York Times
