Say What You Mean: A Generative workshop with Emilly Prado (via Zoom)

Voice in literature can make a story sing, make you sob, and sometimes can make you want to scream. Memoir and personal essay forms also rely on the narrative voice to guide us through a creative work, but it’s up to the writer to craft a voice that is distinct and an entity separate from the writer as a person. This generative workshop will guide participants through a series of exercises, discussions, and analyses of excerpts from writers like Carmen Maria Machado, Mary Karr, and Samantha Irby to explore narrative voice in nonfiction. We’ll consider shifts in perspective, tone, memories, and apply the concept of time travel to support the development of your narrative voice, whether you want your next piece to sound like one long joke told to your best friend, a moody epic, or something in between.
