Sarah Lawrence College Lecture- A Tale of Two Modernities: The Post-War Renewal of Dutch Inner Cities
A lecture presented by Tim Verlaan, assistant professor at VU University Amsterdam/visiting scholar at Fordham University. This talk opens up a new perspective on notions of urban modernity. More specifically, it examines the viewpoints of proponents and opponents of urban renewal during the 1960s and 1970s, demonstrating how both parties thought of themselves as the cultural avant-gardes of a brave new world. The case study concerns Dutch inner cities, which at the time were bracing themselves for a future dominated by business, finance, and consumerism.
