Reflections: “Between I &Thou”
Join us for a day of reflecting on Between I & Thou, with a walk through of the exhibition with Director Livia Straus, artist panel discussion, and the annual Writing the Walls Poets Walk!
The exhibition walk through takes place from 1:15-2:00 with Dr. Livia Straus, HVCCA Director and exhibition curator– No pre-registration required.
From 2 to 3 pm, join us for the ‘Between I & Thou’ panel discussion and talk-back. Artists Cal Lane, Leslie Pelino, Asya Reznikov and Antonio Santin will offer insight into their artistic practices and field questions dealing with the challenges facing artists in the contemporary art arena. Family demands, economic constraints, location and competition for exposure and recognition are familiar constraints for those following a career in the visual arts. This is an opportunity to hear the voices of colleagues, local as well as from overseas, and to have a chance to present your own inquiries and concerns. See below for full biographies.
Now in it’s 11th year, HVCCA’s Writing the Walls program presents the annual Poets Walk takes place from 3 to 5 pm, featuring live performances and readings by the accepted writers of their works in front of the inspiring artworks of Between I & Thou. Artist Talk-Balk Panelist Biographies:
Cal Lane is an internationally acclaimed sculptor known for turning ordinary objects into lacy artworks. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a Master degree in Fine Arts in sculpture from State University of New York. To date, her pieces stand alone in capturing a delicacy and intricacy quite apart from her closest contemporaries. Lane’s tapestries, cut into harsh and often preternaturally large steel and iron structures, are sensual, alluring and deeply effeminate. Lane’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally including Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France and the USA. Cal Lane lives and works in Mahopac, NY.
Leslie Pelino works with salvaged materials- loose thread, ribbon, beads, buttons, flamboyant fabrics of silk, wool and chenille, plastic tubing and metal that, when assembled create a world steeped in nostalgia. Each element has been handled and passed from person to person, generation to generation, interweaving memories, materials and space, down to the antique loom on which the artist shuttles and collapses time. Scraps evolve into visual stories rich in imagination and tailored for individualization. Leslie lives and works in Upstate, New York.
Asya Resnikov was born in Russia in 1973 and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was a young child. She received her M.A. and B.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, and an M.F.A. from Hunter College, City University of New York. She also studied at Universitat der Kunst, Berlin; University of Wolvenhampton, England and Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. Since the inception of her art making, the themes of travel, language, identity in different cultures as foreigner and traveler, immigration, emigration, and otherness have been her focus. Her life stages are reflected in her works, now addressing issues of motherhood and home. Asyah lives and works in Westchester, NY.
Antonio Santín was born in Madrid, Spain in 1978. He received his Degree in Fine Arts from Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 2005. He has exhibited internationally and is represented in the collections of Centre national des arts plastiques, Paris and Museu Europeu d’Art Modern, Barcelona as well as among numerous private collections worldwide. Public installations include a permanent sculpture commissioned by the city of Madrid in 2003. Most recently in 2016, his works were shown at the Sharjah Art Museum for the the nineteenth edition of the Islamic Art Festival. Santin constructs eerie, arresting compositions that simultaneously attract and unsettle in their evocative depictions of sublimated desire. He orchestrates elaborate still-lifes, manipulating both objects and the human form to construct a space he describes as “more real than reality itself”. He creates a visceral tension between surface and space with a range of techniques that incorporate both the technical foundations of classical painting and unexpected alterations to the qualities of oil paint to re-assemble the sensory experiences of everyday life. Antonio Santín lives and works in New York.
