Reading Rilke with Mark Wunderlich (via Zoom)

Rainer Maria Rilke is probably the most widely-read German-language poet, and yet his poems present challenges to readers.  This two-hour class will be a primer on how to approach his work generally.  More specifically, we will look at The Duino Elegies, their framing devices, the themes of the work, and the strange, posthumous voice the poet creates to narrate these extraordinary and difficult poems.

NB: This class will be taught on Zoom and will be capped at 20 students. Registrants will receive the Zoom link to the email address they use to register. It will arrive immediately after registration so please check your spam folder if you do not receive it. It will also be sent the day before class as a reminder. Please review the course policies page before registering for any classes. Please email [email protected] with any questions.

Mark Wunderlich is the author of fours books of poems, the most recent of which is God of Nothingness, published by Graywolf Press in 2021.  He is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, NEA, Civitella Ranieri Foundation, The James Merrill House, and elsewhere, and his work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Poem-a-Day, The Best American Poetry, and has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, and The Slowdown.  He is Executive Director of the Bennington Writing Seminars graduate writing program, and lives in the Hudson Valley near the village of Catskill.
