“Pure Paper” collage by Milai Liang
Harrison Council for the Arts presents “Pure Paper” collage by Milai Liang at the Harrison Public Library, Halperin Building, 2 Bruce Avenue, Harrison, NY on view July 31 to August 25. Meet the Artist on August 2 from 7:00 to 8:45 p.m.
The inspiration is derived from traditional Chinese paper-cutting. Based on this technique, the artist integrates paper-cutting with traditional drawings. The paper is deliberately cut into geometric patterns. The negative and positive space compose pictorial shapes of monochrome; while being integrated with drawings and appearing at the same layer, the contrast of two different media creates an effect parallel to the tenebrism. It is the contrast of exquisite textures and bold colors. It depicts figurative representations, mostly portraits of children and women so that it addresses femininity and childhood memory.
Milai Liang (www.milailiang.com) lives in New York, currently studying in Italy, originally from China; she creatively explores the harmonious effect using paper cutting with drawing to create collage; her work is featured of exhibiting the contrasts of colors and the play of textures, as well as emphasizing the aesthetic value that the visual representation renders. The whole pictorial form has a passion to show the feminine emotion or childhood memory.
The exhibit may be viewed Mondays and Wednesdays 9:30am to 9pm; Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays 9:30am to 5:30pm and Saturdays 9:30am to 12 noon. For info call the Library at 914/835-0324 or see www.harrisonpl.org.
