Poetry Workshop Series: Metaphor Mapping

Date and Time of Class: Tuesday, November 22 & 29, 6-8 PM
Ages: Open to all ages over 16
Cost: $40
Instructor: KM Smith

TECHNIQUE DEVELOPMENT: Highly engaging, eliminates writer’s blocks, great for crisp imagery, and effective symbolism.
Materials Required: Feel free to bring a laptop, notebook, and/or writing utensils.

Metaphors are literary devices that can be particularly useful in making a complex point through comparing one thing to another that is dissimilar to convey a simple effect. They are great tools not just for illuminating a point but also for eliciting high emotions.

In this workshop we will explore mindful metaphor mapping techniques to prime the pump for writing fantastic poems. We will also look at well-known poems that are heavy in their usage of metaphors such as, Maya Angelou – Caged Bird. William Blake – The Poison Tree.
