Poetry as Thought II with Sean Singer (via Zoom)

This is a 6-week class taking place on Thursday evenings, 7-9 pm EST via Zoom, beginning Thursday, April 1, and ending May 6.

This seminar is a skills-based course on thinking about writing as a process rather than a product. It is not a writing workshop, but a space where you can break habitual patterns, get unstuck, and strengthen your creative muscles by enacting skills of craft and psychological sturdiness. Weekly readings, writing prompts, craft talks and class discussions will support participants as they push themselves out of their comfort zones.

This seminar is best suited for intermediate to advanced writers who want to develop new ways of thinking about poetry. Participants will gain the capacity to improve their writing—and improve upon their improvements—through attention to craft issues, including: how to organize a manuscript, understanding the line in the context of how a poem works, the purpose and source of metaphor, using structure to inform a poem’s meaning, and using memory to facilitate poems. All of these topics will be considered in light of contemporary issues impacting poets, poetry and the poet’s position in society.

This is a continuation of the “Poetry as Thought” seminar, but with different concepts and readings. It will be taught online using Zoom. Login instructions will be emailed at the time of workshop registration. Please check spam filters or email admin@writerscenter.org with questions.
