Poetry and Spiritual Reflection with Suzanne Ironbiter via Zoom

This one-day poetry intensive will meet on Saturday, June 12th from 12:30- 4:30 PM EST via Zoom. Login instructions will be emailed at the time of workshop registration. Please check spam filters or email admin@writerscenter.org with questions.

During the pandemic, many of us have had more occasion than usual to reflect on life and death. This workshop will focus on cultivating writing grounded in reflection from inside or outside a philosophical or religious tradition of teachings and practices. We will explore poems by Levertov, Clifton, Hirshfield, and Harjo, and discuss the range of views, experiences, questions, and challenges that emerge as participants consider those poems and develop their own poems or short prose pieces. The workshop is for those wanting to begin writing and those seeking to develop their writing with this kind of focus.

Suzanne Ironbiter’s poems in The Ideal in the Mind (April 2021) and How Fish Learn (2016) explore moments from everyday life as they interweave with spiritual practices. Buddhist and Anishinaabe teachings cast some light on personal, social, and environmental concerns. Her narrative poems Devi: Mother of My Mind (2006) and Devi (1987) respond to deaths in her family, inner conflict, and human violence, and draw from her engagement with Indian goddess myths and Yoga philosophy and practice. She teaches in the Philosophy and Humanistic Studies Department at Western Connecticut State University and has a doctorate in History of Religion from Columbia University.
