Pier Paolo Pasolini: Subversive Prophet

Outspoken and subversive, Pier Paolo Pasolini (Italian, 1922–1975) was a prolific poet, writer, and film director.  This two-part exhibition explores his reception in the Americas as well as his powerful creative output.

The exhibition begins with artistic homages to Pasolini by Chilean, New York–based artist Alfredo Jaar, and the late Uruguayan artist Antonio Frasconi, a former Purchase College professor. Both artists pay tribute to Pasolini while exploring his reception in the Americas: in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and the United States. The second part of the exhibition is devoted to Pasolini’s powerful creative output, featuring his poetry, novels, paintings, and drawings, as well as an introduction to his most important films including original film costumes designed in Rome by Farani.

Pier Paolo Pasolini : Subversive Prophet is curated by Patrice Giasson, Alex Gordon Curator of Art of the Americas, with assistance provided by Elizabeth Orlandini, Curatorial intern; Greg Taylor, Purchase College Associate Provost for Academic Affairs; Paula Halperin, Purchase College Associate Professor of Latin American History and Chair, Film and Media Studies; Luigino Piccolo, Director Sartoria Teatrale Farani; Mónica de la Mora Kuri, Art Coordinator Morelia Film Fest; and Courtney Lykins ’18 (Art History). Major support for this project is provided by the Alex Gordon Estate.
