Photography by Dennis Dilmaghani

Exhibit of Black & White Photographs by Dennis Dilmaghani
at Martin House Workspace in Pound Ridge, NY

“When I find a subject, I try to sense its spirit,
and work to honor that feeling in the printed image.”

“Presence” – an exhibit of Black & White photography by Dennis Dilmaghani, is on display at Martin House Workspace in Pound Ridge, NY thru April 30, 2020. The exhibit features landscapes and cityscapes spanning a range of many years and many places.

The core of Dilmaghani’s art is capturing the grace and beauty of the natural or
man-made world with his camera.  He believes every place has a unique “spirit” or “presence”.  As part of capturing an image, he attempts to honor that feeling.
As part of the developing and printing process, he strives to present his interpretation
in a well crafted photographic print.

Black & White imagery is Dilmaghani’s favorite.  In his words, “B&W provides an abstraction of the subject without a veneer of color which may distract from design, form and texture.”
He further comments, “Color photographs are driven primarily by the appearance of color.  Black & White images are driven by light – the element most directly emphasizing or influencing the varying shades of gray of the subject matter’s design, form and texture.”

Initially self taught, Dilmaghani’s contact with established local photographers directed him to study the works of masters such as Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Edward Weston,
Ansel Adams and others. Their work provided the inspiration to address his photography with a fine art approach.

In the mid 1970s, a former assistant of Ansel Adams saw Dilmaghani’s work and encouraged him to visit Mr. Adams on an upcoming California trip.  The meeting materialized and Ansel Adams critiqued Dilmaghani’s work, requesting one of his photographs. Subsequently, Dilmaghani participated in Adams’s Carmel workshop and was invited to join in a portfolio of 14 outstanding participants and assistants selected from many of Ansel Adams’s workshops.  Dilmaghani also studied with other accomplished photographers, establishing his own style using a traditional large format view camera.
His photographs are in corporate and private collections as well as the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, AZ.

For many years, Dilmaghani developed his film negatives and photographic prints in the “wet” darkroom.   In recent years, he has integrated digital processes into his work.  He continues to photograph with large format (film) cameras as well as digital cameras.  He currently prints most images using digital technology.  However, he fondly recalls the “magic” of photography when, under the orange glow of darkroom safelights, he saw his first printed image slowly appear in the developer solution.
