“Path Through History” Open House at the Purdy House
As part of New York State Path Through History Weekend, The Jacob Purdy House will be open to the public. The Purdy House has been source-documented as General Washington’s Headquarter from July 23 to September 16, 1778. Historians also believe it to have been the General’s Headquarters before the Chatterton Hill battle of October 28, 1776.
The house, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, will be open from Noon until 4:00 PM. Come see authentic displays of what life was like in White Plains in the mid and late 18th century. Guides will be on hand to offer information on the 1776 Battle of White Plains and also on how local families prepared food, furnished their home and made their own candles, brooms and household implements. There will be gifts for children under 12 and light refreshments will be served. All with no charge.
The gift shop will also be open for guests who wish to purchase mementos, books or pamphlets on White Plains history, or sign up for membership in the White Plains Historical Society. Bring friends. Families with children are especially welcome.
