Chroma Fine Art Gallery is pleased to present Underlying Geometry, a solo exhibition of new work by Oscar Hammerstein, on view from February 18 through March 8, with an opening reception on Saturday, February 21, from 3–7 p.m.

Hammerstein’s work explores time, motion, and perception, using painting as a space in which duration can be visualized. His compositions are inspired by phenomena that unfold over time—a body in motion, a car moving through space, the setting sun, or the fleeting spots that appear in one’s vision. Throughout the exhibition, Hammerstein asks how overlapping, dissimilar intervals interact, and what visual language emerges from their convergence.

At the core of Underlying Geometry is a structural framework that anchors the work’s visual intensity. Hammerstein employs underlying geometric systems—such as rotational symmetry and carefully calibrated color sequences—to generate paintings that feel both methodical and emotionally charged. Earlier works, including his “spots in your eyes” paintings, relied on precise geometric logic, a foundation that continues in his current practice.

Using a 24-color palette and rainbow-like patterns layered at varying intervals, Hammerstein creates vibrant, landscape-like abstractions. Though rooted in structure, the paintings remain fluid and experiential. Overlapping rhythms and chromatic progressions echo musical compositions, suggesting visual equivalents to tempo, harmony, and variation.

Abstract yet deeply sensory, Hammerstein’s paintings invite sustained looking. Geometry becomes a vessel for movement, memory, and the passage of time—revealing hidden order beneath dynamic surfaces.
