Join us for a night of jazz and historical tidbits about the Swanky all-black country club formed in 1936 in New Castle, NY. Actors will transport us in time to 1936 as we learn about The Rising Sun Golf and Country Club while enjoying the smooth sounds of the incomparable Ted Daniel, Kendall Buchanan, Abe Speller, and Alva Nelson.

Ted Daniel began playing trumpet in elementary school. He began his professional career playing local gigs with his childhood friend legendary guitarist Sonny Sharrock. He attended Berklee School of music, Southern Illinois University and completed a tour in the Armed Forces where he toured with the US Army Band. After serving in the military Ted attended Central State College in Ohio before returning to NYC and eventually receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in theory and composition from the City College of New York.
Mr. Daniel began his recording career playing on Sonny Sharrock’s first album “Black Woman”. He has participated in over thirty published recordings with such great artist as Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Andrew Cyrille, Sam Rivers, Billy Bang and Henry Threadgill.
Ted has produced three albums under his own name, which are entitled “The Ted Daniel Sextet” on Ujamaa records, “Tapestry” on Sun records and “In The Beginning” on Altura recordings.
Played in the road production of Vinette Carroll’s “When Hell Freezes Over, “‘Il Skate” preforming at Medgar Evers College, Avery Fisher Hall and on Broadway at the Ed Sullivan Theater. The play was then broadcast for the nationwide PBS WNET program, Great Performances. In 1980 Kendall joined the Sonny Sharrock Band and thus began extensive tour dates throughout Europe as well as the 1982 JVC Jazz Festival. The band also recorded the 1982 album “Dance with Me Montana” in Paris France. In following years Kendall has performed with many acts and bands including Jazz Violinist Master John Blair, Doo Wop group Lee Andrews & The Hearts, Former Atlantic Starr Member Porter Carroll Jr. Grammy Nominated Band Sundad and many more.
Abe Speller – Drums and Percussion
Abe Speller was born in Ossining, New York. Started playing drums at Park Elementary School. Inspired by the rich culture that the Ossining African American community had to offer in the late 50’s and 60’s. The music at Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, the records my family played from Mahaila Jackson, Lloyd Price, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Miles Davis and later the Motown Sound of the sixties. My first professional gig was with Embryo recording artist Brute Force that featured three of Ossinings own, Richard Daniel, Ted Daniel and Sonny Sharrock. I would go on to record three albums and tour the world with Sonny Sharrock right up until his death in 1994. From there performing in clubs, Ali’s Alley, Studio RivBe The Village Gate and concerts at Carnegie Hall, The Bottom Line with artist like Phoebe Snow, Pat Benetar, Lonnie Liston Smith, Charles Earland and others.
Alva Nelson’s, CD, entitled “Soul Eyes” (Kilosi Keys Music), is an amalgam of standards & original compositions presented in solo, duet & quartet forms.
As a sideman, he has recorded and performed with Lonnie Plaxico, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Kirk Whalum, David “Fathead” Newman, Arnett Cobb, Tramaine Hawkins, Regina Belle, Eddie Harris, Martha Wash, Chuck Jackson, and The Boys’ Choir of Harlem. Alva has been musical director (and/or Asst MD) for regional theatre productions including “Ain’t Misbehavin”, “Sam Cooke Forever Mr. Soul,” “Dreamgirls”, “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill” (with Suzanne Douglas) “Love Langston” (with Andre DeShields) “Black Broadway” and other shows as a pit musician.
