One Day Intensive Ekphrasis and Collage: Using Art to Make Writing with Sean Singer

The mission of this seminar is to develop an appreciation and application of ekphrasis and collage in making poems. Ekphrasis, not just a description of visual art, but reflecting on the “action” of the art, can be used with collage, using multiple forms and voices– bits of prose, quotation, data, lyric poetry, and heard conversation. These techniques can expand the scope, presentation, and energy of poetry in many ways. Starting with examples, we will see how history, memory, and passionate language can make our poems the intersection of the public & the private, and become an experience of both critique and celebration.
