New Rochelle Plays Hollywood Film Series: STATE FAIR (1945)

State Fair (1945); STARRING JEANNE CRAIN, DANA ANDREWS, DICK HAYMES, VIVIAN BLAINE.  DIRECTED BY WALTER LANG (100 MINUTES); nominated for two Academy Awards; winner of one.

Set just after World War II, this Rodgers and Hammerstein original – their only musical written directly for the screen – celebrates a hopeful new era as a Midwestern family heads to the State Fair — where prize pigs, mince pies, and young love take center stage. Featuring a glorious score, including the Oscar-winning “It Might As Well Be Spring.”

New Rochelle Plays Hollywood is a film series presented by the New Rochelle Public Library. Prior to the screening, film aficionado Les Srager will introduce the history of the film and its creative personnel with a discussion period following the screening. Our Spring 2026 series is “Golden Age Movie Musicals” – an uplifting series featuring mid-century musicals.
