This week on NEU To Do, the Neuberger Museum of Art looks back to a Fall 2017 retrospective of Ignacio Iturria, one of Uruguay’s most accomplished artists. Iturria’s work is included in the Destination: Latin America exhibition featured in Inside the NEU (week of July 13, 2020).
For more than four decades, Ignacio Iturria has examined society in a profound and poetic manner. In his small theatrical stages filled with whimsical people and animals, Iturria creates universes inside of which he transforms found objects and uses trompe-l’oeil effects to play with viewers’ perceptions. Approximately forty such paintings were the focus of the first part of the exhibition, A Studio in the Gallery: The Playful Universe of Ignacio Iturria. The second part of the exhibition featured a living studio in which the artist worked in collaboration with Purchase College students during a two-month residency. The new works created during this collaboration were added to the retrospective as they were completed.
Visit the NEU To Do webpage this week (July 20 – 26) to learn more about the artist, view works from the exhibition, and listen in on discussions with the artist and exhibition curator Patrice Giasson, the Alex Gordon Curator of Art of the Americas.
