Music as Experience: The Dalcroze Way
Hoff-Barthelson offers Dalcroze Eurhythmics Workshop for Adults

Hoff-Barthelson Music School and the New York Chapter of the Dalcroze Society of America will offer Music As Experience: The Dalcroze Way, a workshop for Adults, with Dean Emerita Ruth Alperson on Saturday, April 25, 2020, from 2-5 pm, at the School, 25 School Lane, Scarsdale.

The workshop is tailored to learners at a variety of experience levels; Dalcroze Eurhythmics students and teachers, as well as those new to the method are welcome to attend and participate. During this workshop participants will journey through some of the Dalcroze Subjects — phrase, silence, beat type, measure shape – and explore a work from the literature through group improvisation. The workshop will conclude with a Q&A session.

The fee to participate is $15 for NY Dalcroze Society Members and HBMS students; $35 for non-members.

Reservations are required and can be made by e-mailing hb@hbms.org. Space is limited to 50 participants.

Attendees should plan to arrive for registration by 1:30 pm and wear comfortable clothes for moving.

Suggested footgear is non-slip socks or thin-soled shoes (no sneakers); bare feet are best.

About Dalcroze Eurhythmics:

Émile Jaques-Dalcroze developed the approach known as Dalcroze Eurhythmics in the early 20th century. Dalcroze pedagogy emphasizes the use of natural movements of the body in the learning of music concepts and musical expression. A central element in the process distinguishes Dalcroze Eurhythmics from other approaches: the use of improvised music by the eurhythmics teacher in communicating with – and responding to – the students. Underlying his methodology was the belief that at the core of musical experience is rhythm, which is embodied in movement and gesture.

About Ruth Alperson:

Dr. Ruth Alperson’s first eurhythmics class was with Inda Howland at Oberlin College; this set her on a lifelong career path in the discipline. She studied with Dr. Hilda Schuster in NYC at The Dalcroze School of Music, and obtained the Licentiate from The Dalcroze Teacher Training Course, directed by Elizabeth Vanderspar, in London, England. Ruth was awarded the Diplôme, the highest degree in Dalcroze studies, at L’Institut Jaques-Dalcroze in Geneva, Switzerland, and earned a Ph.D. in Arts and Humanities from N.Y.U. Ruth has given Dalcroze workshops in the U.S. and Canada, Central America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. She is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference of Dalcroze Studies (ICDS).
