This six-week workshop will focus on how sound and structure in a poem can convey meaning, and how the line may function as both individual and integral unit. Each class will begin with a discussion of a single, brief poem by a major poet that demonstrates the merging of lineation and sound work toward making the poem cohesive and memorable. Then we will consider this aspect of craft (among others) in your own poems. Anticipate a fast-moving and lively workshop!
NB: This six-week class class will be taught on Zoom and capped at 12 students. Link will be sent to email you use to register at the time of registration and again the day before the class. Scholarship information will be available for this class on July 15th and applications are due on August 15, 2022.
Michael Waters is the author of numerous poetry collections, including seven from BOA Editions: Caw(2020); Celestial Joyride (2016); Gospel Night (2011); Darling Vulgarity (2006), a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; Parthenopi: New and Selected Poems (2001); Green Ash, Red Maple, Black Gum(1997); and Not Just Any Death (1979). He is co-editor of Contemporary American Poetry (Houghton Mifflin, 2006), and editor of The Selected Poems of A. Poulin, Jr. (BOA Editions, 2001). His honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Fulbright Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, five Pushcart Prizes, and Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
