Landscapes: A Celebration of Trees – Black & White Photographs by Dennis Dilmaghani

Exhibit of Black & White Photographs by Dennis Dilmaghani
at Rye Free Reading Room

“Landscapes: A Celebration of Trees”

An exhibit of Black & White photography by Dennis Dilmaghani is on display at the Rye Free Reading Room, Rye, NY thru the end of September.  The photographs on exhibit are landscapes featuring trees.

The core of Dilmaghani’s art is capturing the grace and beauty of the natural or man-made world with his camera.  He believes every subject, animate or inanimate, has a unique “spirit” or “presence”.  He attempts to honor that feeling when presenting his photographic interpretation in a well crafted printed image.

Black & White imagery is Dilmaghani’s favorite.  In his words, “B&W provides an abstraction of subject without a veneer of color that may distract from design, form and texture.”  He further explains, “Color photographs are driven primarily by the appearance of color.  Black & White images are driven by light – the element most directly emphasizing or influencing the varying shades of gray of the subject matter’s  design, form and texture.”

Initially self taught, Dilmaghani’s contact with established photographers pointed him to the works of masters such as Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Edward Weston, Ansel Adams and others. Their work provided the inspiration to address photography with a fine art approach.

Dilmaghani was fortunate to participate in Ansel Adams’s workshops and was subsequently invited to take part in a portfolio of 14 outstanding participants and assistants selected from many of Adams’s workshops.  Dilmaghani has also studied with other accomplished photographers, establishing his own style using a traditional large format view camera.   His photographs are in corporate and private collections as well as the Center for Photographic Arts in Tucson, AZ.

For many years, Dilmaghani developed his film negatives and photographic prints in the “wet” darkroom.   In recent years, he integrated digital processes in his work.  He continues to work with large format (film) cameras as well as digital cameras.  He currently prints most images using digital technology.  However, he always recalls the “magic” of photography when, under the orange glow of darkroom safelights, he saw his first printed image slowly appear in the developer tray.

Photography is Dennis Dilmaghani’s lifelong passion.
