On View: April 13 – June 25, 2023
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 15 | 5pm-7pm
Kibbitz & Nosh: New York City’s Vanishing Cafeterias features over 25 photographs by Marcia Bricker Halperin that document the waning years of New York City’s self-service dining establishments play a role in advancing the understanding of Jewish life and the evolution of Jewish society in mid twentieth-century New York City. Among the locations she photographed between 1975 and 1985 are Horn & Hardart automats and Dubrow’s, a popular family-owned chain of cafeteria-style restaurants in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Like Hopper’s Edward Hopper’s iconic paintings of eateries, Halperin’s black-and-white photographs capture figures in isolated contemplation or private social interaction.
