Intensive Poetry Course — The Call of the Wild with Fred Marchant

From fish in the sea to birds in the air and all the living things in between, the world of the wild has always been a source of poetic inspiration. And no doubt there is a streak of wildness inside us humans too. Hovering in the background of everything wild is the ecological crisis of our time, and its enormous implications for all of life. In our day-long workshop we will examine and discuss a number of relevant poems and other writings by others, but the primary focus of our workshop will be on your own work. I would like everyone to bring to our session sufficient copies of one poem that you care deeply about and which you believe relates to “the call of the wild.” We will discuss these poems in detail and with an eye toward generating ideas for future poems. Should time permit, we might even do some free-writing in order to start some new work.

Fred Marchant is the author of five books of poetry, the most recent of which is Said Not Said (Graywolf, 2017). Earlier books include The Looking House, Full Moon Boat, House on Water, House in Air, and Tipping Point, the latter recently reissued in a second edition. Marchant has co-translated (with Nguyễn Bá Chung)selected works by Trần Dăng Khoa, and Võ Quê. He is the editor of Another World Instead: The Early Poems of William Stafford and the founding director of the Suffolk University Poetry Center in Boston. An Emeritus Professor of English, he is the winner of the May Sarton Award from the New England Poetry Club, given to poets “whose work is an inspiration to other writers.”
