In Conversation: Allison Miller & Daniel Gerwin

Join the Neuberger Museum of Art as Allison Miller, contemporary artist, and Daniel Gerwin, artist, curator and writer, discuss Miller’s recently acquired works in the Neuberger Museum of Art collection—Spinning Field and Spinning Table, purchased through the museum’s Basil Alkazzi Acquisition Fund—as well as her current body of work for her upcoming exhibition in March 2021 at Susan Inglett Gallery, New York. The speakers will engage in conversation with the audience at the end of the program.

About the Artists

Allison Miller is an artist based in Los Angeles. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is represented by The Pit, Los Angeles and Susan Inglett Gallery, New York and has had solo exhibitions at The Finley, Los Angeles and ACME. Los Angeles. Her work has been included in “Mülheim/Ruhr and the 1970’s,” curated by Alice Könitz, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany; “Made in L.A. 2012,” organized by the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Pizzuti Collection’s “Now-ism: Abstraction Today,” Columbus, Ohio; “…six memos for the next,” curated by Tilo Schulz and Jorge van den Berg, Bregenzer Kunstverein, Austria; as well as in group shows at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art; the Art Gallery of Calgary, Canada; the Las Vegas Museum of Art; and the Orange County Museum of Art. In 2014, Miller was the recipient of the Richard Diebenkorn Fellowship in conjunction with the San Francisco Art Institute and the Headlands Center for the Arts and in 2017, she was the recipient of the Frederick Hammersley Visiting Artist Fellowship in conjunction with the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. Miller’s work is in the collections of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, the Orange County Museum of Art, the Pizzuti Collection, the West Collection and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Neuberger Museum of Art. Miller’s work has been reviewed in ArtForum, frieze, the Los Angeles Times, Modern Painters, The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic and Flash Art.

Daniel Gerwin is an artist and writer based in Los Angeles. His 2019 solo show was reviewed in the LA Times, and his work has been written about in Frieze, ArtCritical, Hyperallergic, and other publications. He has curated two previous exhibitions in Los Angeles and is at work on a third to be presented in March 2021. Gerwin has taught painting, drawing, and theory, and writes regularly about contemporary art for Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, and Hyperallergic, as well as catalog essays and other exhibition texts. He received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania, his BA from Yale University, and has taught at University of California Davis, University of the Arts, University of Iowa, and University of Pennsylvania. In 2004 he was awarded a residency at Blue Mountain Center, and in 2016 he was a Resident Fellow at the MacDowell Colony.
