Illuminating the Dark: Intensive Flash Fiction Workshop with Anna Potter


A one-day intensive generative workshop on the joys of writing flash fiction. If novels are baggy monsters (shout-out to Henry James), then flash fictions are sea sparkle, the bioluminescent plankton that light up when agitated. The best flash uses the condensed form as a way to express emotion that would get obscured by too many details. We do not always need to know the particulars of a character to grasp their most desperate desires, their regrets, their fear that what is lost might never be found. We’ll read a range of flash pieces for inspiration, and we’ll practice techniques for revising for punch and clarity. We will also discuss the many journals who are accepting submissions for flash and what editors look for in flash. Poets, fiction, and creative nonfiction writers are all welcome.

Anna Potter is a former James Merrill House fellow and a Pushcart Prize nominee. She is a professor of English at Dutchess Community College and a bookseller at Little Joe’s Coffee & Books in Katonah, New York.
