Hudson Valley Music Club April 2020 Student Awards Concert CANCELLED


The Hudson Valley Music Club holds an annual competition for talented Westchester County high school students. The winners are invited to display their talents at a concert in April. This year’s concert will be held on Monday, April 27, at 1:00 PM at the Dobbs Ferry Woman’s Club, 54 Clinton Avenue, Dobbs Ferry. Admission is $20.00.
A reception will be held after the concert where the audience can meet the artists and enjoy refreshments

The winners of this year’s competition are (in alphabetical order):

Zachery Barnet, Cello, The Masters School, Grade 12

Zack Barnet is a senior at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry. He began studying cello at age 5 at Hoff-Barthelson Music School, where he currently studies with Maxine Neuman, plays in the Festival Orchestra as a principal cellist, and is enrolled in the Honors Program. Zack has also studied with Peter Seidenberg and Nicole Johnson, played in master classes for Natasha Brofsky, Peter Stumpf, Peter Wiley, Alan Harris, and Pamela Devenport, and performed in ensembles with violinist Rachel Barton Pine and jazz bassist John Patitucci for Hoff-Bartheleson Gala Benefit concerts. Zack has attended summer programs at Kinhaven Music School, Music at Port Milford in Ontario, Canada, Bayswater Suzuki Group in London, England, and Hartt Suzuki Institute. He enjoys singing and is a member of Dobbs 16, the competitive a cappella ensemble at Masters. He is also a regular performer in the school’s musical theater productions, recently performing in a leading role in Side Show.

Margaret Kantor, Flute, Scarsdale High School, Grand 12

 

Margaret Kantor is currently a senior at Scarsdale High School. She has been studying flute with Donna Elaine for the past 10 years at Hoff-Barthelson Music School where she is a member of their Honors Program. In addition to the flute, Margaret studies voice under the direction of Jenny Hayden. She has been involved in many performance groups like the Scarsdale High School Wind Ensemble, Hoff-Barthelson Festival Orchestra, and the Greater Westchester Youth Orchestra. In the summer Margaret has spent her time at Interlochen Arts Camp, working with world-renowned conductors and teachers.  Margaret has had the opportunity to perform in spaces like Carnegie Hall and David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. She has also played many concerts abroad in Australia, Ireland, and Northern Ireland. Margaret would like to thank her teachers and family for all of their continuing support through her musical endeavors.

 

Jack Wei, Piano, Horace Greeley High School, Grade 11

 

Jack Wei is a junior at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY and studies piano with Tatiana Goncharova at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege. He has performed at Merkin Hall, Steinway Hall, and Carnegie Hall, as well as been selected as a winner in the Vivo International Music Competition, Crescendo International Youth Competition and the National Young Maestro Competition.

 

 

Brian Zhou, Oboe, Briarcliff HIgh School, Grane 11

Brian Zhou, 16, began his studies in music when he was 5 years old in Briarcliff Manor, where he attends Briarcliff High School. He currently studies oboe and English horn with Alan Hollander privately, but he has previously been taught by Lisa Kozenko, Bette Condon, and Delia Montenegro. Brian is a member of the Hoff-Barthelson Festival Orchestra and participated in the 2019 NYSSMA All-State Wind Ensemble on both instruments. In May 2019, Brian received First Prize at the Jerome G. Sala Concerto Competition and performed Gaetano Donizetti’s Concertino for English horn with the Lehman College Community Band.In addition to oboe and English horn, Brian is a dedicated pianist of 11 years, studying with Rie Matsumoto at Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale, NY. He has received the Gold Medal award from the New York State Music Teachers Association for his program of C. Ives’s The Alcotts and F. Chopin’s Ballade No. 3 in A flat major.
