Announces 2017 Student Awards Winners

The Hudson Valley Music Club holds an annual competition for talented Westchester County high school students. The winners are invited to display their talents at a concert in April. This year’s concert will be held on Monday, April 24, at 1:00 PM at the Dobbs Ferry Woman’s Club, 54 Clinton Avenue, Dobbs Ferry. Admission is $18.00.

Cellist Mizuki Hayakawa, 17 is a junior at Edgemont High School in Scarsdale, who currently studies with Natasha Brofsky at the Juilliard School Pre-college division. She started violin at age 4 in Japan. After she grew interest in the cello at Hoff Barthelson’s summer program, she started studying cello with Nicole Johnson alongside studying violin with Barbara Berg at Hoff. Under the influence of Nicole and her father Marc Johnson, Mizuki grew to love chamber music and is currently in the Firefly Quartet through the New York Youth Chamber program. She has won numbers of competitions as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed in venues such as the Weill Hall, Stern/Perelman Auditorium in Carnegie Hall, Rose Studio in Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall, Ozawa Hall, Koussevitzky shed at Tanglewood. She has performed in master classes with Paul Katz, Richard Aaron, Paul Watkins, Alan Harris, Fred Sherry, Clive Greensmith, Norman Fischer, Roger Tapping, Shanghai Quartet, and Muir Quartet.

Benjamin Spector, 16, has studied cello since the age of 4 at the Hoff Barthelson Music School (HBMS) in Scarsdale where he continues to study with Ms Nicole Johnson. He has participated in Master Classes with Pamela Davis, and Alan Harris, and has received ensemble coaching through the HBMS educational partnership with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Ben is currently a Junior at the Horace Mann School where he plays with the high school Orchestra; he was selected to play with the Strings Symphony at the 2016 NYSSMA All-State Winter Festival. In January 2017, he was one of 12 cellists chosen to premier new compositions at Cello Solos Today! In New York City. When he is not playing solo or chamber music, Ben is an avid computer programmer (url: halite.io), roboticist, rocketry and all-around science enthusiast, and a ping pong, tennis, and ultimate frisbee player.

Vishnu Srinivas is a recent Grand Prix winner at the Concert Festival, and has received awards and prizes at the National Young Maestro competition, International Chopin competition in Connecticut, American Protégé, New York Young International Artists competition, American Association for the Development of the Gifted and Talented, Golden Key Music Festival and American Fine Arts Festival.Vishnu has performed a few times at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and also at the Merkin Hall.Vishnu attends Manhattan School of Music as a student of Tatiana Goncharova and has previously studied with Victoria Mushkatkol.He is a freshman at Scarsdale High School and enjoys reading fantasy fiction.

Stephanie Tateiwa started playing the piano when she was 3, picked up the saxophone in 5th grade, the clarinet in 8th grade, and she is now a sophomore at Harrison High School. At Harrison High School, Stephanie is in the marching band (field commander/section leader), the jazz band, concert band, and enjoys performing in the pit orchestra for productions including A Chorus Line, Damn Yankees, Guys and Dolls, and The Addams Family. She also has been attending the Mannes Prep program since 2015, and now plays in the philharmonic orchestra as the principle clarinetist. In 2014, she performed at the Grand Prix Winner’s Recital sponsored by Concert Festival at Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall on the piano. Last summer (2016), Stephanie was selected as the winner of the concerto competition and the best female musician at New England Music Camp.
