How to Fall in Love with Poetry with Sean Singer (via Zoom)
How to Fall in Love with Poetry with Sean Singer will meet for six consecutive Mondays, 6:30-8:30 PM EST via Zoom, November 7 – December 12.
This class is about how to read a poem and fall in love with poetry. Close readings and class discussion that allows participants to really dig in and explore the craft and mechanics of a poem and then how to write powerful moving poems of their own.
Stanley Kunitz said that writing poetry is one of the hardest, most life-affirming things a person can do. Taken seriously, it is not a specific repertoire or academic exercise, but a way of life.
The mission of this course is to better understand poetry as a process—as a verb—rather than a product.
Most writing problems are thinking problems. Poetry—both reading it and writing it—is the best way I know to sharpen my thinking. In this class we will spend six weeks looking at the ways that poetry can sharpen our thinking. Each week we’ll focus on a set of specific topics. Our class discussions will be supported by readings and writing prompts that you’ll complete before each meeting.
