History Book Club for Adults – Learning, Community, Friendship with David Sherrin (in person at HVWC)
Join a group of adult lifelong learners for a relaxed and thought-provoking journey through the colonial Atlantic World. You will receive the introduction (or one chapter) and join each session having read that section or the entire book. At the class, we will discuss the selection and a few additional related historical sources for an hour to deepen our understanding of the topic and then have some time to socialize with snacks and a beverage of choice.
Books:
— The Island at the Center of the World by Russell Shorto (colonial New Amsterdam)
— Bury the Chains by Adam Hoschchild (British anti-slavery movement)
— Avengers of the New World by Laurent Dubois (Haitian Revolution)
The group will take place on 4 Thursday evenings – April 13, April 27, May 11, May 25 (every other Thursday) from 7:30-9:00 pm and is limited to 20 people. It will take place in person at HVWC, located at the Philipse Manor RR station, 300 Riverside Drive in Sleepy Hollow, NY.
The group will be led by David Sherrin. David is a social studies teacher at Scarsdale High School, the creator of the podcast “Conversations in World History,” and the author of three books on education and two upcoming picture books. He was a NYC Master Teacher, the winner of the 2014 Robert H. Jackson National Award for Teaching Justice, and has recently been nominated for the 2023-24 National History Teacher of the Year award. He loves to think, talk, and write about history and to eat pretzels.
