Heavy as a Feather: Harnessing the Power of the Image with Angela Narcisco Torres (via Zoom)


Seamus Heaney said that in poems, small things can bear the weight of anything. In this craft class we will explore the power of the image to do heavy lifting in poems, i.e., embodying the complex thoughts and emotions surrounding human experience, whether in one’s interior life or in the world. We will look closely at how some master poets have employed the image and find strategies for our own work.

Angela Narciso Torres is the author of What Happens Is Neither (Four Way Books), To the Bone (Sundress Publications), and Blood Orange (Willow Books). Recent work appears or is forthcoming in POETRYPoetry Northwest, and Prairie Schooner. A graduate of Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers and Harvard Graduate School of Education, she received First Prize in the Yeats Poetry Prize (W.B. Yeats Society of New York). Born in Brooklyn and raised in Manila, she currently resides in San Diego. She serves as a senior and reviews editor for RHINO Poetry.
