Artist’s Statement:

The goal of my work is to incorporate some of my passions into visual art. In my early years, my father would recite poetry and my mom did needlework. We spent long afternoons on the back porch overlooking the woods practicing calligraphy. In art school I took extra lettering classes and eventually fell into early design work that involved patterning and color. It is only natural that I should be implementing landscape, lettering, and poetry in my fine art. My text based paintings are my signature series that I began over 15 years ago. More and more of the paintings include my own poems, written during the course of the creation of the art. I’m inspired by classic poetry and really enjoy the challenge of the haiku format. I’m slow to call myself a poet, and initially credited some of the works written into my paintings as “anonymous” until a gallery who moved my work encouraged me to take ownership. I wish to find kindred spirits in exhibiting my work, and hopefully bring a feeling of peace and hope to those who take notice.
