Gallery is open to the public during regular library hours.
Artist’s Statement:
Paper is generally recognized as the backdrop of artistic creation, often serving as a tool but seldom stepping into the spotlight. I have juxtaposed Chinese paper cutting and portrait drawings into whimsical collages, as a tribute to my cultural heritage as well as my identity. Paper’s transformative role from medium to main subjects, where the delicate art of Chinese paper cutting meets the expressive power of drawing, my oeuvre is a symphony of these two distinct art practices, a deliberate and harmonious blend that yields more than the sum of its parts.
About the Artist:
As an independent artist with roots in Beijing, China and an international education background from Europe and America, Milai has crafted a personal artistry that intertwines paper cutting and portrait drawing, establishing a signature style that uniquely belongs to her.
The creations navigate the interplay of color and texture, each piece a deliberate composition that strikes a balance between visual allure and conceptual depth. In capturing the quietude of women and children, the spirit of the work exhibits a deep dive into the nuanced realms of femininity and the whispers of childhood recollection, ensuring that contributes to a larger narrative steeped in aesthetic elegance and profound meaning.
