Harrison Public Library presents “Emergence” by Michal Romero

Exhibition is on display February 2, 2025 to February 28, 2025.
Gallery is open to the public during regular library hours.

Artist’s Statement:
As I process my thoughts and experiences, creating in solitude nurtures me. I work out my thoughts and experiences through tireless layers and structuring on the canvas. This is how I make sense of my conditions and how to navigate through life.

My work depicts nonobjective imagery that is often derived from nature. I allow my thoughts to unfurl in my paintings. Hills, lakes, pines, cliffs, sand, and rocks cascade through my senses as I experience them both physically and in my mind. In them, I find space to feel calm and look for answers to any questions that I may ask myself–or simply to sieve and let go. My ability to find direction is achieved through patience and sentience. Sometimes, I see signs that appear to direct me. I feel both ancient and young and feel a deep knowing that I don’t fully understand. The viewer is invited to relate to each piece, acknowledge any sensation they receive, and build their own experiences from my work.

About the Artist:
Michal Durham Romero was born in 1983 in east Texas and has been drawing since the age of 4. Romero creates dynamic abstractions of her experiences based on notions of spirituality and nostalgia. Her creative approach derives from how she perceives her surroundings and how certain objects or images stay with her over time. Her methodology consists of layering and restructuring her compositions until her curious shapes and strokes are unified and, thus, feel resolved.

She received her BA at the University of Texas at Austin in 2007 and her MFA from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2012. Michal won the “Visual Communications Through Art” Award from the Visual Art Alliance Houston, the December “Artist of the Month” award from Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition, has work in UT Tyler’s permanent collection. A firm believer in the importance of fine arts in everyday life, Romero has spent 7+ years educating others at the college and secondary levels about art processes, art in-context, and fostering individual creativity.

Romero lives and works in Ossining, NY.
