Glimpses of New Castle’s Past: Pictures by Local Artists

A wide range of subjects and styles are on view in this exhibition of pictures by twentieth-century artists portraying landmarks and other scenes in our community. These works come from the NCHS’ own extensive collection and include several on loan from the Chappaqua Library.

Two artists are featured in particular. James Renwick Thomson was an architect who designed what is now the Robert E. Bell School and many local homes. He was also a talented artist whose mastery of the transparent watercolor technique gave his works an atmosphere of airy spaciousness. W. Stuart Archibald, by contrast, used more opaque colors to create a painterly series of building portraits.

Favorite subjects of several artists include the former Sutton Farm, the Quaker Meetinghouse, and the Memorial Day parade. Louis Raymond captured the spirit of local events such as the first Community Day and the Garden Club flower show. One of the most dramatic works is an aerial view of Chappaqua Village in winter by illustrator Kenneth Fagg.
