Gary Smulyan @ 70!
There’s no more accomplished baritone sax player in jazz today than Gary Smulyan. A six-time Grammy-winner, seven-time DownBeat critics’ poll-winner, Gary’s long been considered, as DownBeat wrote, “the beboppingist bari player to come along since Pepper Adams.”
He’s fearlessly played in all sorts of settings – duets, trios, alongside organ trios, hard-bopping quintets, big bands – and always swings for the fences. He’s celebrating his 70th birthday, the perfect time to also celebrate his artistry.
Gary Smulyan & Frank Basile, baritone saxophone; Steve Ash, piano; Mike Karn, bass; Matt Wilson, drums
