Vandals. Artists. Eye-sores. Masterpieces. Depending on the audience, the word “graffiti” earns vastly different labels. Once considered a guerrilla act of vandalism, the graffiti aesthetic is now widely embraced by cities as an impetus of urban renewal and by the art world as a viable movement. Anchored by large-scale mural commissions by some of the best-known American urban artists, “From the Streets” follows graffiti’s stylistic evolution from its genesis as a 1980s youth subculture in the Bronx to its rising prominence in the global art scene. Mixed-media installations, murals and works on canvas will highlight the mastery and diverse practices of today’s street artists. “From the Streets” is an exuberant journey through the evolution of street art that throws a spotlight on urban visual culture now.
Opening Reception for the unveiling of the show will be on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 4-6PM. Viewers are welcome to come and stop by and meet both the show’s curators and participating artists while getting a sneak peak at the show before it opens to the public. Snacks and refreshments will be provided at the opening.
