Film Screening: Indigeneity, the Environmental Crisis, and Hope in the Hudson Valley

In recognition of Earth Day, join Oceans 8 Film Director and Producer Jon Bowermaster, Indigenous seed steward and member of the Mohawk community of Akwesasne Rowen White, and Professor Isabel Lockhart, who teaches “Indigeneity and the Environmental Crisis” at Sarah Lawrence College, for a film screening of Seeds of Hope: Growing the Past to Save the Future. Following the film, which is part of the Hudson River Stories: Hope on the Hudson series, they will discuss connections between the dispossession wrought by settler colonialism and how the Indigenous Seedkeepers Network are working toward environmental and food justice by restoring seed sovereignty.

See and feel seed and plant samples cultivated by the Hudson Valley Farm Hub, and sample a traditional Indigenous recipe made from reclaimed seeds. Engage in Q&A with three activists who, recognizing the intrinsic connection, are working, each in their own way, to preserve the environment and culture of its Indigenous peoples.

The conversation will include simultaneous ASL interpretation, and the film is subtitled.
