Experimental Drawing with BAC studio artist Peter Leeds
Title: Experimental Drawing
Instructor: Peter Leeds
Dates and Times of Class: 7 sessions; Tuesdays, September 12, 19, 26, October 3, 10, 17, 24 6-7:30PM
Ages: 16+
This class can be defined as the study of purely making marks on a surface. Mark making in art and design refers to how artists create patterns, lines, and textures with marks when drawing and painting. It is both a sensory and physical activity, which includes artwork created in various media.
No experience needed!
We will work with:
Speed Drawing – How the mark is created using blind mark making and a non traditional medium to draw with. We will use continuous line drawing with a method of staring at the subject as you draw it continuously and keep your eye on the subject matter. We will focus on observing the objects (not the paper)as we draw.
Negative Space Drawing – Concentrate on the spaces between the objects using a different medium. For example, using torn toned paper glued between the objects and not the objects themselves. This technique can create some visually exciting compositions and it’s well worth a try if you are looking to expand your repertoire of drawing methods.
Unique Mark-Making Tools – We will build, invent, learn tools to make different marks and create textures, motions, and drawings based on our environment and what’s available. The more experimental and unusual your choice is the best. For example, when drawing outside, many artists will use sand, twigs, or branches to draw with.
We will also study basic drawing techniques using patterns, shapes, and lines along with studying tone and value scales. Each class we will learn about a new experimental artist and how they chose to explore their projects opening up new possibilities for us to learn from. Come join us on this experimental journey at Bethany Arts Community.
